Lots of our patients come to our consultation complaining of pain or different type of sensations, in the lower back area and/or along their legs. These symptoms are normally known as Sciatica pain.
What is Sciatica? When people say they have sciatica often they will report having low back pain that radiates down one or both legs. Sometimes it may only go from the low back to the buttock or hip. Frequently we see patients with a combination of pain, weakness and electric sensations in the leg. Also people report burning, tingling and numbness down to the foot. In some cases, there is no pain in the lower back area, only in the legs or buttock.
Why is it so painful? To cut a long story short you could be “pinching” a nerve or some of the nerves in the low back area that come together to make the sciatic nerve that travels down the leg to the foot. The nerves communicate different types of information to the brain, for example, touch, vibration, temperature, position of the body and last but not least, pain.
What causes it? Perhaps a trauma or an accident but more commonly we will hear our patients say something like: “All I did was bend down to tie my shoe laces and my back went!” The truth is that back injuries don’t occur solely through a simple activity such as tying your shoe laces. How many thousands of times have you done that before without a problem? For most of us it’s an accumulation of many micro traumas caused by our lifestyles. Bending down to tie your shoe laces was ‘the straw that broke the camel’s back’.

Chiropractic looks at the person as a whole, and looks at the problem from the point of view of dysfunction, if the dysfunction is corrected; then the problem is solved permanently. Many people suffering from low back pain and sciatica problems are treated symptomatically with drugs and years later find their lives complicated by having developed herniated discs and degeneration (osteoarthritis and loss of disc height).
Chiropractors can test to find out which nerves are being affected and, with time, they can effectively and safely treat people suffering from sciatica. Better than that, regular Chiropractic care can help to prevent sciatica from occurring in the first place!
