It’s not likely anyone has said that to you before but have you ever considered it? It’s not just a simple case of eating too much food, being overweight and exerting too much mechanical stress on the spine that causes symptoms. Have you ever considered the possibility that if you eat food that irritates your intestines then the abdominal muscles that support your spine lose strength and in turn the spine is more prone to ailments?
Interesting stuff! If you consider how the body develops and functions, then it actually makes good sense... The first thing to develop in a foetus is the nervous system: the brain comes first, then the spinal cord and then the nerves. Then the nervous system directs the growth of the rest of the body: organs, bones and muscles. Thereafter your nervous system maintains the body and coordinates its actions.

So, how could irritated intestines affect your abdominal muscles? They share the same nerves! If you irritate one then you could affect the other via a viscero-somatic reflex that is orchestrated by your nervous system!
If you have ever tried to do sit-ups the morning after a spicy curry you might know what we mean. But seriously, many females could attest to low back pain with menstruation and anyone who has been constipated may have experienced back aches aswell. These are further examples of the viscero-somatic reflex at work.
Now back to diet, we know that diet affects the intestines that affect the abdominal muscles that affect spinal health. So, what foods could irritate our gut and increase the likelihood of low back pain? There is no simple answer because each person is different, with intolerances to different foods and with different levels of intolerance.
However, let’s consider gluten, which can be found in a wide variety of food stuffs like bread and pasta. A minority of people are dangerously intolerant to gluten, coeliacs, but many are bloated after a bowl of pasta. It goes without saying that coeliacs cannot eat gluten but what about people who get bloated after eating foods that contain it? Well we will leave it for you to decide but hopefully you now have a better idea of how your diet can also affect your spinal health!
